I will. I won't and I want

The Willpower Instinct
"Instead of thinking of willpower as the ability to resist temptation it is actually 3 powers/aspects/sides of will power.
I will (remembering future goals),
I won't (resist temptation),
and
I want power (clear memory of what it is you care about most - put your desires, your energy and attention on what you care about most). "

How Do I Work With…

Here is a great article by Hypnosis and NLP Trainer, Keith Livingston at Hypnosis101.com

"How To Be Slow, Ineffective, And Cause Needless Pain & Suffering"

"How do I work with anxiety about social situations? How do I work with someone who is having trouble getting over a breakup? How about nail biting? Smoking? Phobias?
I think those questions lead us in a not-so-useful direction. I understand why people ask them though…

The Diagnosis/Treatment Model Is Broken

All around us we are encouraged to name what is wrong with us. We think we can’t “treat” unless we “diagnose.” Well, guess what–unless you have specific training in diagnoses and treatment, as a hypnotherapist/hypnotist, you’re not qualified to do either of those anyway.

But that’s OK. It’s even an advantage if you think about it. Personally, I think it’s one of the main reasons why sometimes NLP and hypnosis can be more powerful and more effective many times more quickly than some standard approaches. We can be more effective because we can’t diagnose! Or rather because we don’t focus on the issue, but the process a person goes through that creates the behavior they don’t want.

So, I’m going to say something a bit dramatic here. And you don’t have to believe me or take me at my word, of course. It’s just my experience.

If You Are Focused On Issues, You’re Probably Not Going To Be Fast & Effective

If you think, “How do I work with _________ (fill in the issue here)?” you’re probably thinking about it in the wrong way (according to the mighty and all-powerful Keith).

I get it all the time. How do I work with social anxiety? How about nail biting? Smoking? Phobias? For me, it’s the wrong approach.

Why?

The Dangers Of Issue-Based Thinking

1) You think that one issue is different than the next and you focus on the differences.
2) It’s easier to get caught up in content.

The Benefits of Process-Based Thinking

1) Quicker
2) You don’t listen to as much to “story.” Most stories about problems are depressing and useful only in gathering some bits of information about the problem.
When I teach classes, I often work with someone as content free as possible, as a demonstration. It might go something like this…

Content-Free Work

Me: Hi. I understand you have something you’d like to change, is that true?
Them: Yes.
Me: So, you have a behavior or response you’d like to change? What do you feel right before or during the behavior you’d like to change?
Them: Powerless.
Me: Ok. Powerless. Shake that off. What would you have to feel for that behavior to change in the best way possible?
Them: What do you mean?
Me: What emotion would completely transform that experience for you, in a way that, if you were in that same situation but feeling the new emotion, it would come out completely differently for you? You wouldn’t have the old behavior or response and the new behavior/response would be just what you wanted?
Them: Oh, empowered.
Me: Anything else?
Them: Calm and confident.
Then I move them physically, get those positive emotions up and running in their bodies, anchor them and say something like…
Me: OK, having these positive emotions (fire off the anchor) as a way of being, how does that transform that experience (step them back into the space they were occupying when we talked about the problem)? How is it different now?
Them: Uhm, well, it doesn’t really change it. It just doesn’t seem to matter much any more.
Me: Do you do the old behavior or have the old response?
Them: No. Instead, I…
Me: Wait. Don’t tell me what the new response is. I just want to know if you’re satisfied with it.
Them: Yeah, it’s cool now.

As A Demo, For A Reason

Then I ask my students what the presenting problem was. They don’t know, of course. They might have been talking about wanting a cigarette or feeling put down by their spouse or being afraid of clowns or being anxious in social situations or wanting to get over a breakup.

I ask the students if it’s necessary to know what a problem is in order to change it. No, of course. I ask them how long it took. Usually a few minutes. These are the advantages of working as content free as possible.

I also point out that we don’t have much information about what we’d call ecology in NLP. For all we know, that person might now be planning on going home and kicking their dog and we helped them feel pretty good about it.

So, I don’t typically advise people to work totally content free.

But being able to work this way is key. And I advise any student to work as content free as possible until they’re comfortable with it (on small issues with other students).

So, if you send me a question about how to work with a particular issue, I might send you to this article :-)

How Do I Work With…

The biggest part of the answer to any questions about how to work with a particular issue is this…
Find out what they’re doing in their mind that leads them to the response they don’t want and help them change it."

Enjoy,
Keith

FAQ about Weight Loss

When you come in for each session, we will focus on your specific issues and goals. You will always receive one-to-one, personally customized sessions.

Hypnosis is a safe, non-invasive tool you can use to help yourself. When you work with me at Hypnosis Seattle, it is good to plan on 1.5 to 2 hours for your hypnosis session. We will begin with sharing information and you will tell me your specific goals and what you would like to change in your life. Next, we will spend time learning some effective processes that will support you in the changes you will be making. The last hour or so will be spent doing relaxation, induction, and hypnosis specifically focused on the goals you will achieve. All my clients experience trance during each session.

Hypnosis may not feel any different than your normal waking state of awareness. During hypnosis, your conscious mind may remain focused on my words or it may drift off, so you do not track what I am saying. It doesn’t matter what your conscious mind is doing during hypnosis, because your unconscious will be listening to everything and you can trust that you will go to the level of trance that is appropriate for you. There is no pressure to perform, because all you have to do is relax.

When your hypnosis session is complete, you will feel calm, relaxed, refreshed, and ready to bring your full attention to the rest of your day.

Here are some frequently asked questions about how I approach weight loss sessions:

Can you tell me about your approach for weight loss, specifically?

There are many complex factors involved in weight loss.

The goal is to identify and remove the blocks that are interfering with permanent weight loss and to learn to listen to your own body's intuition or Inner Wisdom. Hypnosis allows you to eliminate old negative programming and reprograms your subconscious mind with positive thoughts, images and behaviors. You can even identify and release whatever has been holding you back from achieving the results you want in your life. Every thought affects the body in some way.

With hypnosis, you enter a state of relaxation and heightened suggestibility, so you can easily access the creative part of yourself at an unconscious level where learning and change take place. Hypnosis will affect the way your brain and body feel about food, emotional hunger, cravings, your belief about your body and much more. This will help you feel better, more energized and feel positive about creating whatever you desire in your life.

Controlling stress, eliminating cravings, drinking more water, improving self-esteem and increasing confidence are the keys to successful weight loss. Hypnosis can be used to identify and clarify the physical, habitual and emotional factors for your weight problem and can help change those patterns. Positive suggestions are used to reprogram your subconscious mind to help you meet your goals in healthy, pleasant ways.

How do you reach the root of the problem (beyond just trying to change behavior)?

At Hypnosis Seattle, I include techniques that are specifically designed to reach the root of the problem, such as Parts Integration, Timeline, Future Pacing, NLP, Body Talk, Core Beliefs, Re-programming, Inner Voice, Anchoring, HeartMath, Somatic Healing, Ho’oponopono, Post Hypnotic Signals, and a process using Guided Imagery that resolves any hidden conflicts that may have kept you from reaching your goal. There are also breathing techniques and a process called meridian tapping that I may teach you and you can use whenever you choose.

What level of long-term success have you had with clients seeking help with weight loss?

Almost all my clients notice specific changes and experience positive results after the first session, so that really helps to create momentum to reach your goals with confidence. Specific feedback from my clients helps us fine tune the next sessions.

Some of my clients have specific weight loss goals that they want to measure in pounds or clothes size. Others want to stop eating sweets or to stop late night eating. Many clients have more general goals, such as making healthier food choices, or to stop eating when they are stressed or for emotional reasons.

When your behavior changes, you will know that hypnosis is working. Healthy weight loss is achieved over time.

Most weight loss clients schedule 3 sessions about a week or two apart. Some clients like to take more time between sessions. A few people choose to schedule their sessions a month or so apart.

You know when you do not need any more sessions when you easily make the choices you want and continue to make progress towards your weight loss goal.

How many sessions does it take to get results?

Sometimes only one or two sessions are needed to begin positive changes, and other times, there are more complex factors involved and it takes more sessions to address what comes up for each individual. Results are ultimately achieved by applying these techniques over time.

Do you consider weight loss through hypnosis to be particularly challenging since it's not a habit you can quit altogether?

Weight loss responds very well to hypnotherapy. Safe and effective, hypnosis creates a special psychological state which allows you to make positive change happen and get the results you desire.

The following information is from The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) which is the largest U.S. organization for health and mental health care professionals using clinical hypnosis.

In a 9-week study of two weight management groups (one using hypnosis for weight loss and one not using hypnosis), the hypnosis for weight loss group continued to get results in the two-year follow-up, while the non-hypnosis group showed no further results (Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985).

In a study of 60 women separated into hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups, the groups using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds, while the non-hypnosis group lost an average of only .5 pounds (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1986).

In a comparison of the results of adding hypnosis to weight loss treatment across multiple studies showed that adding hypnosis increased weight loss by an average of 97% during treatment, and even more importantly increased the effectiveness POST TREATMENT by over 146%. This shows that hypnosis works even better over time (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1996).

If one is already conscious of their eating habits - will the change hypnosis offers be sufficient?

The part of our brain that decides whether to burn calories or store fat is very old and responds to whether it perceives stress or not. To this old part of our brain, any kind of stress gets translated as “not enough food”. When the brain thinks there is not enough food, that signals this old part of our brains to store fat to survive. Using hypnosis to train relaxation into our brains and using relaxation techniques right before we choose to eat anything, will communicate to the mind of our body that there is plenty of food and there is no need to store fat. Hypnosis allows you to train your brain and body to return to this healthy, relaxed state automatically.

Hypnosis allows you to communicate with your DNA so that the genetic programs that tells your body it needs to store fat can be turned OFF, and turn ON the DNA programs that tell your body it wants to be thin, which will allow your body to burn the calories you eat.
A negative inner monologue can also create a lot of stress in your body. Do you frequently think negative thoughts? When you start changing the tone of your thoughts to be more positive, they will trigger more positive emotions and reduce stress.

Also, when under stress, whether it is physical, emotional, mental or environmental, real or imagined, the stress hormone cortisol is released. Cortisol is produced in the adrenal glands which rest on top of the kidneys. These glands also release adrenalin, as an immediate response to stress and cortisol is released under prolonged periods of stress. Both adrenalin and cortisol are necessary in small amounts for us to adapt to stress effectively. In high levels, however, they can have many negative effects on our health including storage of unneeded fat. Also, cortisol shuts down your ability to absorb the nutrients from the food you eat causing your body to send hungers signals to eat more.

It seems that mental or emotional stress is the most harmful to us because it is not followed by a relaxation response in the way it happens with most physical stress. Our brain and body fail to return to a resting, healthy, balanced state. This can lead to weight gain or prevent weight loss.

Hypnosis allows you to train your brain and body to return to a healthy, relaxed state automatically.

Stop being a picky eater!

http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com/healthy-eating/picky-eater
Discover the pleasures of enjoying a wider variety of foods.
It's easy to stop being a picky eater when you use hypnosis to help you make the change.

Do you find yourself examining every plate of food that's put in front of you to check that it meets your personal food rules?

Is eating with others a trial because you might get faced with something that you don't want to try?

Being very careful about what you eat is sensible behavior in certain specific contexts. For instance, if you are in a place you don't know whose cuisine you are unfamiliar with, or where you are very uncertain of the food hygiene. Or if you have specific allergies or health conditions where certain foodstuffs can make you ill.

But for most of us, in our home cultures, it's pretty safe to eat pretty well anything.

Picky eaters are caught up in anxiety.

But sometimes you can get caught up in a pattern of anxiety and refusal around certain foods that doesn't have any solid basis in reality.

There can be lots of reasons for this, ranging from early childhood experiences with food to maybe a couple of disastrous encounters with certain foodstuffs that just make you scared to try anything new ever again.

Does it matter if you're a picky eater?

While in the big scheme of things being very choosy about your food doesn't matter all that much, it can be a pain to you and to people around you at the personal level.

It's embarrassing to feel that you've got to refuse to eat food that others have carefully prepared for you, for instance.

And it's a shame to be cut off from the wide range of pleasurable food experiences that other people take for granted.

But there is something you can do about it.

If there isn't an important health reason for you to limit the range of foods you eat, you can personally train your brain to expand the scope of foods that it will tag as 'acceptable' and 'safe' for you to try.

Hypnosis can help you learn to eat a wider range of food. Feeling more and more calm about food in general. Enjoying tastes and textures that you may never have experienced before. Along with getting the health benefits of a more varied diet.

Hypnosis Proven Effective for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com/health-issues/irritable-bowel-syndrome
Hypnosis can help ease your symptoms caused by Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Over a decade of scientific research has shown hypnotherapy to be an effective choice for alleviating the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Hypnotherapy routinely produces positive results for the people who use it.

Hypnosis has been so successful for improving IBS symptoms that Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, chair of the National Women's Health Network in Washington, DC, says that hypnosis should be the treatment of choice for IBS cases which have not responded to conventional therapy.

The main theory behind the success of hypnosis for IBS is that the relaxation improves blood flow to the gut - something that stress tends to inhibit - and so improves digestion and the movement of food through the bowel.
